William Shields is a 14-year-old Native American born on January 17, 2011 in Flagstaff, AZ. Since birth, William has known North Carolina as home. William craves things that go fast, are loud, and smell like gas, oil, or rubber. His true love for racing came with the release of the Disney Pixar movie, CARS!, when he was two and a half. As he watched this movie over and over throughout his toddler years, he learned some valuable racing lessons at a young age that he aims to apply in racing strategies and techniques for chasing checkered flags.
During his toddler years, William was an avid collector of Diecast NASCAR, matchbox-style cars, that portrayed various NASCAR celebrities. With his collection, he made numerous stop-motion videos of his “bedroom” NASCAR races. He used props such as cotton to record stop-motion crashes or burn-outs. He has attended several NASCAR events with his family including Darlington, SC; Charlotte, NC and Martinsville, VA. William hopes to visit more NASCAR events throughout his involvement in racing quarter midgets. William shows extreme interest and often assists with various racing/maintenance tasks as we lead up to and during racing events (i.e. help set up our pit spot, scrap tires, etc.). William is excellent at communicating any issues with the car he notices during practices and/or qualifying so we can jump to action to correct the issue before the main racing events.
Entering High School in 2025-26, William plans to take Automotive and Drone Technology courses. Post High School, he would like to attend the NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, NC.
As William continues his racing journey into his 2nd year, he hopes to get the opportunity to share his racing skills in other car classes / types, such as Bandoleros, Legend Cars, etc. as many do who are moving on from racing quarter midgets. He hopes the sky is the limit to how much he can be involved with racing ~ his ONLY true love!
In 2024, William moved up to Blue Rookie after 3 Red Rookie races. From Blue Rookie, he moved into the competitive Heavy Honda class as the team gathered more knowledge and confidence in car setup and the maintenance it requires in building a winning racing team.
Upon completing Rookie Training just weeks before the start of the 2024 Season, it was GO TIME with practicing leading uop to his first race. William ran his first race in the Red Rookie class on March 23rd, at NCQMA’s 1st Championship Series Club Race. William brought home the win during his first race ever. He brought home a trophy, plaque, and “Winner” stickers for placement on his car. This was an exciting and motivating experience for him and a young family racing team.
